I love the NFL, but I have a huge soft spot for Aussie rules football (aka footy), much in thanks to ESPN running AFL games on a loop in the good old, pre EVERYONE YELLING AT YOU days. You know, back when Chris Berman had hair, was 50 pounds lighter and was still relevant. But I digress...

After the punt game debacle against the Bears last Sunday, and Ryan Donahue still injured, the Lions decided something needed to be done. So they cut punter Robert Malone in order to sign Ben Graham, former Geelong Football Club centre half-forward / centre half-back and team captain.

Yes, the Geelong Cats
with those marvelous vertical stripes...

To get an idea as to how massive Graham's leg was down under, listen to the announcers wax rhapsodic in this YouTube clip.

Graham is also a master of the "Torpedo punt." (By the way, is there a beter name for a kick than "Torpedo punt?" Maybe coffin corner...)

Graham left the 2nd best sport on the planet back in 2005 to move on to the greatest sport on the planet, American football. He's bounced around the NFL ever since, playing for the Jets, Saints and Cardinals (becoming the first Australian to play in the Super Bowl), averaging 44.2 YPP.

Graham is 38 and on the down side of his long, mixed sport career, but anyone who played Aussie Rules is A-OK in my book. Even better, the signing of Graham gave me an excuse to post some AFL clips.

Regardless of the strength of Graham's leg, if the Lions' coverage teams don't improve, not even the Torpedo punt is going to help against the Panthers.
