I was following along with the Lions final roster cuts in an earlier post, but once the team announced the list of waived players wouldn't be announced until 8PM, it became a hurry up and wait scenario.
Around 8:15, the official list was released. Kudos go out to Mlive's Killer Kowaslski, who was the first beat guy to get the names out on Twitter, here, here and here.
Without further ado, here's the players who met the Turk today.
No, they didn't meet this Turk...
CB Dré Bly
DT Rob Callaway
LB Caleb Campbell
LB Vinny Ciurciu
WR Brian Clark
DT Landon Cohen
RB DeDe Dorsey
G Noah Franklin
C Dan Gerberry
K Steven Hauschka
CB Jonathan Hefney
T Jon Jansen
CB Eric King
T Cliff Louis
WR Michael Moore
CB Paul Pratt
CB T.J. Rushing
S Ko Simpson
WR Tim Toone
CB Dante Wesley
Also made official is DE Korey Bosworth being waived/injured by the Lions, after breaking his leg on Thursday.
Six, count 'em, six cornerbacks were given their walking papers, including Dre Bly. Yes, even Bly. He's no longer a Pro Bowl player, not when he's 100 years old in cornerback years. It's not as if the Lions were working from a position of strength to begin with, all of the released corners were journeymen, at best. Trust me, there will be no tears shed for ciutting Eric King. Even with the acquisition of Alphonso Smith this afternoon, the Lions are ungodly thin at the position. There has to be more going on...such as the Lions' brain trust scouring the waiver wire for newly available corners.
As my Twitter buddy Armchair Linebacker put it:
Holy shit. Schwartz basically walked into the CB meeting w/a flamethrower and went wild.
The Schwartz has a scorched earth policy when it comes to corners...
Hauschka was a dead kicker walking as soon as he signed with the Lions. Jason Hanson was going nowhere, and is apparently healed enough from knee surgery to both place kick and kick off.
Cohen is somewhat of a surprise, considering his big game on Thursday. But with Suh, Hill, and Williams, the Lions have a very good core. With the coaches deciding Andre Fluellen had more upside, claiming the fourth and final tackle spot, there's no room on the roster for Cohen. The Lions are no longer going to carry 11 defensive linemen, unlike the days when the the team was coached by a loon who liked to make shovel analogies.
With the release of fumble prone DeDe Dorsey (no matter how well you run, putting the ball on the turf gets you cut), the running backs are the much loved Jahvid Best, the much maligned Kevin Smith, the much older Maurice Morris, and the much improved Aaron Brown. Last and probably not getting as much playing time he might deserve, is the fullback, Jerome Felton.
We already know Toone and Campbell are headed for the practice squad once they clear waivers. Odds are good they will. The rest of the squad will be named later tomorrow.
As I said earlier, the 53 man roster we see tonight will not resemble the roster we see head to Chicago at the end of the week. But for time being, the Lions have decided upon their 53 best players.
