The Lions prize rookie, 2nd overall draft pick Nicky Suh (Nicky? I'm sick and tired of having to copy and paste "Ndamukong" every time I write a post about the kid), is making the rounds, including an appearance at today's Indy 500. He's a bonafide celebrity!
Lions rookie Ndamukong Suh knows his NFL career is on the fast track. And this weekend he took advantage of his newfound VIP status again, as one of the celebrities walking the Izod-sponsored red carpet prior to the Indianapolis 500.
Oh, to be young, popular and (soon to be) rich...
As for getting Ndamukong off the red carpet, and back on the field, it's going to take some time.
An interview Suh's agent Eugene Parker gave to a Nebraska newspaper has been popping up around the web, and it's peppered with a few statements which might alarm Lions fans.
Such as:
“Typically what happens,” Parker said, “is when there’s a sense of urgency by both parties, things get done.”
And:
“We’ve had conversations. It would be safe to say the parties are communicating. We have had and we are having communications.”
Good to know they are "communicating" via "communications" and "conversations." Whatever the Hell that means.
Actually, the most alarming thing isn't what is said in the interview. What's more alarming is the fact Suh's agent is the same agent who did his damnedest to end Michael Crabtree's 49er's career before it even started.
If you remember, Crabtree held out all though training camp, sat out the opening weeks of the 2009 season, didn't sign till October 7, and finally made it on the field 3 weeks later. The holdout was a waste of everybody's time, as Team Crabtree ended up caving, essentially signing something very close to the original Niners offer.
So I'm pretty damn sure the Lions aren't dealing with a brain surgeon when it comes to Parker, which is truly alarming. Suh's loopy agent is a true wild card in the negotiations.
Regardless, I'm not overly concerned at this point. We're at the end of May, and there's plenty of time to get a contract hammered out. Then again, maybe I should say there's plenty of time for the Rams to get a contract done with Sam Bradford, so the Lions and Parker have a number to work down from.
When all is said and done, barring any Crabtree-like insanity (always a possibility, remote it may be, with Parker running point), my best guess is Suh will be in Allen Park on July 31st, ready to start the first workout of 2010 training camp.
It's not as if the Lions have had an issue with getting players to camp on time. The issue has been getting GOOD players into camp, period.
