Reports had former Giants and Texans free agent safety C.C. Brown visiting the Lions today.
Turns out it was for more than just a visit.
Via Nick Cotsonika at the Freep:
Safety C.C. Brown has signed with the Lions as a free agent, his agent, Chad Wiestling, confirmed today. Brown passed his physical with the team this morning.
His contract is for one year.
Brown joins a suddenly crowded group at safety. It includes journeyman vets Ko Simpson, Marquand Manuel and Marvin White, the once waived and recovering from a severe knee injury Daniel Bullocks, and the only safety guaranteed to be in the starting lineup come September, Louis Delmas.
So the Lions sign another defensive back who has starting experience, but was not considered good enough by his former teams to retain. Brown was a starter for the Giants, but was benched halfway through the '09 season. He also had his issues with the Texans.
Still, compared to the stiff of the week the Lions constantly ran through the defensive backfield last season, Brown is hopefully a step up. How big a step up remains to be seen, though I'm not expecting much. Giants fans were more than happy to see see CC go go. (Just take a look through the comments at PFT)
At best, Brown is likely a player better served as a backup. But in defensive back starved Detroit, he may get a chance to play, and play often.
