According to PFT, they have a source saying his sources claim Adam "Pacman" Jones has agreed to a deal with the Lions.

Per (NBC Sports Digital G.M. Rick) Cordella's sources in Sin City, cornerback Pacman Jones has agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions, and the move will be announced next Tuesday.

According to Mlive's Killer Kowalski, his Lions sources say differently.

However, according to a source close to the situation, the team has not reached any agreement with Jones. Another source called it "way off base.''

The National Football Post takes the middle ground, saying the Lions are obviously interested, but aren't yet convinced Pacman has changed.

The bottom line is the Lions are not going to sign a player like Jones with a littered past of ridiculous behavior without thoroughly investigating the guy. This isn’t a move they’re just going to jump into, and from the sounds of things they don’t have any competition right now for the services of the former star. Is a deal in place right now? The club just returned from the owners meeting and that would be acting awfully fast. Could a deal be in place soon? Sure.

You already know how I feel. This is the season to take a leap of faith with Pacman, as it's an uncapped season. Offer him a deal heavy on incentives, then get his ass in camp. If he can play, great! If Pacman shows he can't play, is still a knucklehead, or both, nothing lost but some cash.

As to the contract speculation?

I'm leaning towards the view of the NFP. Something is definitely brewing between Pacman and the Lions, but there's no deal set in stone as of yet. The Lions are seriously thinking of taking the leap, while someone in Pacman's circle jumped the gun (No pun intended, though with Pacman...) with claims a deal is on the table, only waiting for signatures.

But if I were a betting man, I'd bet on the Lions inking the infamous cornerback.

Why?

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and the Lions' defensive backfield is desperation personified.

As for all the naysayers, saying the Lions should pass, no matter what, due to Pacman being a locker room cancer? If the Lions determine he can't play at an NFL level, that's one thing. But if the Lions stay away becaase they're afraid Mr. Makin' It Rain is going to rock the Lions' chemistry?  Then it wasn't a very good locker room to begin with.

Update: Apparantly, we can put the "Pacman Jones signing with the Lions" rumors in the maybe column.

The Detroit News via AP:

At least three teams, -- the Lions, 49ers and Bengals -- have expressed "great interest" in the troubled cornerback, though no signing was imminent, agent Ray Savage said Friday.

Savage said he hoped to set up in-person visits with those teams in the near future.

"Nothing's imminent, and I'm hopeful to schedule visits here in the next week or two," said Savage, whose comments came two days after Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said the Lions were "definitely interested" in signing Jones.

This could be nothing more than an agent trying to up his client's price, because the claimed 3 teams in the running for Pacman is down to 2. According to Matt Maiocco, Niners beat writer for the SF Press Democrat, the Niners are no longer in the Pacman market.

(49ers' director of player personnel Trent) Baalke left no room for interpretation when asked about free-agent Adam "Pacman" Jones.

"At this time there is absolutely no interest in Pacman," Baalke said. "And I don't see that changing."

And so the negotiating, posturing and information gathering goes...
