Avoiding a holdout, running back Jahvid Best has agreed to a contract with the Detroit Lions.

Via Killer Kowalski at Mlive:

The Detroit Lions have confirmed that running back Jahvid Best, a first-round draft pick out California, has agreed to terms on a five-year contract.

The deal was agreed to just about the time the team officially kicked off its training camp at 6 p.m. Friday.

PFT is claiming Best's deal is for $9.8 million. The National Football Post reports it's worth a few million more.

Best agreed to a five-year, $12.7 million maximum value contract. It includes $7.1 million in total guaranteed money.

Either way, Best is now a rich man and set to become an important part of the Lions' offense.

Best is the 16th 1st round selection to come to terms. But as nice as it is to have Best locked in, of more importance to Lions fans is the contract status of 2nd overall selection Ndamukong Suh.

Sad to say, there is no change in Suh's contract status.

The player all our hopes for a revived Lions' defense ride on remains unsigned, as does the 1st overall pick, Sam Bradford, and the 3rd overall, Gerald McCoy. The highest pick to agree to a deal as of Friday night is Trent Williams, the 4th overall selection.

Word out of St. Louis is Bradford has an offer for somewhere between $72M-$82M on the table, but has yet to make a decision. What is confirmed is the contract is worth more than the deal Matthew Stafford signed last year ($72M, $41.7M guaranteed).

Obviously, Suh is not going to get $70M. But $60M-$65M, with approximately $35M guaranteed sounds about right...if you go by what the number two pick in the 2009 draft, OT Jason Smith, received ($61.775M, $33M guaranteed).

As the Best watch ends, the Suh watch continues. I'm anticipating it'll end sometime Saturday afternoon, right about the time the Lions suit up for their first workout of camp.

But then again, I'm a optimist...even when it comes to the Lions.
