I'm just getting ready to settle in and watch the BCS Championship game, and catching up with my NFL RSS feeds while doing my best to ignore ABC/ESPN's inane pre-game show (What's with Mark May's glasses?). All was well...until I read this...
Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said today that the team might be interested in bringing back (Daunte) Culpepper, who is an unrestricted free agent.
I'm not thrilled by Mayhew's comment, but he may be treading water with the press in saying such a thing, keeping all options open...even if this option isn't a good one. It's far too early in the off season to know exactly who will be available as a backup quarterback and who will actually lower their standards (or desperately needs a paycheck...any paycheck) in order to join the Lions.
Then Killer really had to go and hash my mellow by contacting Culpepper for his take on Mayhew's take."I am honored that the Lions would consider bringing me back,'' Culpepper wrote. "I have a lot of respect for the entire Lions organization and I really enjoyed being in the city of Detroit. I welcome dialogue with Mr. Mayhew about their plans.''
"Honored?" Welcome dialogue?" Sure sounds like agent-speak...but Culpepper acts as his own agent. His statement especially sounds carefully worded, as he may realize the Lions may be the only team willing to take him on...at a considerable discount from his previous deal, of course. Culpepper can't seriously be interested in coming back, could he?
Nah.
Well, on second thought...maybe?
Daunte Culpepper needs a job, Martin Mayhew needs a backup quarterback. But this is no match made in Heaven. More like two desperate parties doing their damnedest to be polite in public, feigning interest in each other till something better, anything even remotely decent, comes along.
I hope my take on the situation is correct. Otherwise, this is going to be one unhappy Lions fan.
