Lions logos thru the years

No word on the Donte' Stallworth front, as the Lions aren't talking. DetFan1979 isn't too worked up over the workout at Roar of the Lions, and rightly so. He is happy the Lions will "leave no stone unturned" in their search to fill the roster with legit talent...unlike a certain previous regime.

The NFL will all but go into hibernation for a couple of weeks, till the combine workouts begin in earnest the last week of February. If you are curious as to whom the league will be working out in Indianapolis, the always organized to the point of being anal NFL has posted the official list of invitees. Of course, the 2 big name tackles the Lions are supposedly interested in drafting, Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy, are on the list.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Nick Cotsonika at the Freep reports the Lions will not use the franchise tag on any of their free agents. When the names to possibly franchise include Larry Foote, Will James and Casey Fitzsimmons, Martin Mayhew's decision to not worry about using the tag was a no-brainer. I'm thinking Mayhew's contract strategy is to determine what Matt Millen would do...then do the exact opposite.

SI's Don Banks answers a "burning question" for each NFC team, including the Lions. Banks' answer isn't anything we Lions fans don't already know. Yes, they had a good '09 draft. Yes, the Lions need to follow up with another good draft this year. Yes, either Suh or McCoy are their likely selection. Yes, the Lions need to get younger with their free agent signings. Yes, Kevin Smith is a question mark going into camp. And yes, the Lions need another running back. As always, this sort of "national" piece barely skims the surface and is aimed at readers who don't know jack about the Lions.

Part in response to Banks' piece, the Detroit Lions Weblog lists the Lions biggest free agent busts of the past decade. As you might guess, Damien Woody is high on the list. Woody should have been prosecuted for fraud. He robbed the Lions blind.

Michael Schottey, Lions featrued columnist at Bleacher Report who has made a couple of appearance on The Knee Jerks podcast, participated in BR's mock draft. The selection? It's McCoy.

For all the talk of scatback (Why doesn't anyone use the term "scatback" anymore? It's damn descriptive!) Reggie Bush being of interest to the Lions, all indications are the Saints aren't going to let him walk. Despite Bush's contract kicking in for a huge and undeserved pay raise, the Super Bowl champs still want him. Or better put, are still stuck with Bush, as being owed $19+ million over the next 2 seasons make him untradable.

Speaking of running backs, Pat Caputo makes a suggestion on his Oakland Press blog that makes a certain amount of sense. The Lions should target unrestricted Titans free agent Lendale White. Depending on the price, White could be a solid pickup. He's still relatively young, and with the emergence of Chris Johnson, has only 2 seasons of 200+ carries in his career. White should still have quite a bit of tread left on the tires. The down side to White is one which ails almost all Lions running backs...the lack of speed.
