As not entirely expected, a league source tells us that the Lions decided to expose Dizon to waivers, in order to free up a roster spot.

The NFL is a business, first and foremost. But as cold as it seems to waive a severely injured player, there is a method to their madness. To keep teams from attempting to stash young players before rosters are cut, the league requires players with less than four years experience to be exposed to waivers before they can be placed on injured reserve.

Jordon Dizon injury

One Hell of a way to make a not very secure living...

The Lions, having been bedeviled by injuries, decided they couldn't wait until after the first round of cuts to open up Dizon's roster spot. In order to do so, Dizon, who tore his ACL against the Steelers, had to be waived.

Who wants an undersized middle linebacker who has never lived up to his 2nd round draft status, was drafted by Matt Millen, and let's not forget, is badly injured and out for the season? Unsurprisingly, no one in the NFL does.

Dizon wasn't picked up by another NFL team, and was placed on the Lions' IR.

The Lions need bodies for practice, and Dizon's is no longer healthy. So having to waive the young linebacker was a business decision, but let's not forget it's also a personnel decision.  From all accounts, this was just the NFL's standard method of operations.

Football's a brutal business, isn't it?
