The draft took a little over 14 hours over 3 days. 45 million plus NFL diehards watched all or parts of the mind-numbingly dull event, proof positive pro football is our true national pastime.
I get as excited as the next guy when it comes to the Lions and their personnel moves, but the draft, and the excrusiatingly long build up to it, is mind-meltingly insane. It's so far over the top, it's gone underground. It's 3 days too many of having the evil that is Mel Kiper, Chris Berman and Steve Mariucci in my life.
I'm just glad it's over and done with for another year.
With the draft in the rear-view, what are the Lions currently doing?
They're busy releasing training camp roster filler...
Via Lions' PR:
The Detroit Lions release WR Michael Ray Garvin, RB Cedric Peerman, CB Deangelo Smith and DT Terrance Taylor.
...while signing undrafted college free agent training camp roster filler.
Ryan Stamper, LB, Florida, Aaron Berry, CB, Pitt, Jessie Hester, WR, USF, Randy Phillips, S, Miami, Mike Moore, WR, Georgia, Rob Calloway, DT, Saginaw, Matt Clapp, FB, Oklahoma, Sam Scroggins, LS, W. Virginia St., Richard Dickson, TE, LSU, John Jacobs, LB, Saginaw (Tryout), Mike Hicks, OL, UConn (Tryout), Chima Ihekowaba, DE, Wilfrid Laurier (Tryout), Aaron Higdon, RB, Charleston (Tryout)
If you'd like to know a little more about players who have approximately a 2% chance of making the team (and I'm being generous), Phillip Zaroo at Mlive has a short writeup on some of the glorified tackling dummies just signed rookies.
Just when will this group, along with the Lions top 6 draft picks, and possibly anyone who happens to pass by their Allen Park HQ, do something resembling football?
Once again, via Lions PR:
The Detroit Lions will hold a rookie orientation (mini-camp) Friday, April 30-Sunday, May 2 at the Lions Headquarters and Training Facility in Allen Park.
I'm all a-tingle.
Hey, it's better than listening to Kiper defending his pre-draft ranking of Jimmy Clausen....
