Reports are starting to trickle out as to the Lions' roster cuts. A couple of familiar names are in those reports, thank goodness.
Via the Killer at Mlive, through PFT, which got the news from Scout.com:
According to reports, the Detroit Lions have already severed ties with three players, including two who were with the team last season. Running back Aveion Cason and defensive tackle Chuck Darby, who were with Detroit in 2008, were both released.
Also mentioned as gone in the PFT post is OG Lydon Murtha, which is no surprise, and K Billy Cundiff, who may return the moment the Lions won't be on the hook for his season long salary, as Jason Hanson is still dinged up. Scout.com is reporting rookie free agent LB Spenser Smith and 7th round selection, TE Dan Gronkowski, are long gone. PFT reports WR John Standeford, a waiver wire pickup last season, is no longer a Lion as well.
Murtha and Gronkowski may be headed to the practice squad. I'd love to see Gronkowski stay with the Lions, as he showed a knack for making plays during the exhibition season while Brandon Pettigrew and Will Heller were laid up with injures. If there is one thing the Lions have lacked, it's playmakers.
Chuck Darby was one of Rod Marinelli's prize free agent pickups prior to the '08 season, a must have to run his beloved Tampa Too defense. The Shoveler went on and on about his "War-Daddy" being a "heart eater." Whatever the Hell the heart eating BS was supposed to mean is beyond me, as Darby was a big time disappointment. About all he ate was undeserved playing time, making little impact. No hearts were harmed during Darby's time in Detroit.
In regard to Cason, he was a serviceable back at one time, but that time was long past, and the Lions just plain asked him to do things we was incapable of doing. Also, it was ABOUT F'N TIME!
Cason needs to be as far away from the D as possible, so Stan Kwan won't have any excuse to use him as a kick returner ever again! One of the most frustrating things to watch during the the season we will no longer speak of by name was Cason returning kickoffs, and running into the pile at the 15. Cason was never a threat to break a long return, but would, at the very least, hold on to the ball. Faint praise, I know.
For reasons I'll never, ever understand, Marinelli and Kwan were more than happy to continually use Cason, a kick returner who couldn't return shit. Is it any wonder the Lions finsihed winless?
Other cuts of interest to Lions fans: Ronald Curry, who was traded to the Rams for DT Orien Harris back in July, met the Turk today.
Joey Harrington met the Turk in New Orleans for strawberries and cream, but was unable to stick as the 3rd QB with the Saints. Joey Blue Skies reputation as a QB has fallen about as far as it can go, and you have to wonder if his underwhelming NFL career is over.
Paris Lenon, the former Lions MLB who somehow led the Lions in tackling last season, yet couldn't tackle squat, was cut by the Patriots. God forbid the Lions think he could help their LB corps. Crap, I hope I didn't jinx it...
More to come on the roster moves as I hear it...
