With Drew Stanton out for Thursday's exhibition at Buffalo with a knee injury, and Daunte Culepper now questionable as well with a cut on his toe which required 8 stitches (Holy Hell! Be more careful with the freaking toenail clippers, dude!), the Lions claimed another QB off of waivers late today.
The latest signal caller to enter the black hole of suck in Detroit is former Patriots backup and 3rd round selection in '08, Kevin O'Connell. O'Connell should fit right in with the Lions, as he was so bad for the Pats this exhibition season, he fell from being almost assured the role of backing up Tom Brady, to being unceremoniously waived after stinking it up Friday night.
From the Boston Herald:
But signs of displeasure became evident early in training camp when veteran Andrew Walter was signed. It was thought the move might light a fire under the sluggish O’Connell, but there was never any spark and he failed to take control of the No. 2 spot.
In fact, he went backward.
The 24-year-old quarterback was ineffective during the preseason - and that’s putting it nicely. He was 12-for-26 for 108 yards with two interceptions. His passer rating was 25.8. Friday night, he was at his worst, going 2-for-9 with two interceptions against the Redskins.
The Lions sign a Patriots washout? The Patriots, who have a reputation of being excellent talent evaluators? Who felt fine in cutting an '08 3rd round pick even thought they have absolutely no one competent (Andrew Walter? Brian Hoyer? BRIAN HOYER? HA!) to back up Brady? The Lions went fishing for a QB, and came up with...O'Connell?
Wonderful. Just wonderful.
O'Connell makes the utterly below average Brooks Bollinger (Signed earlier today when the Stanton news broke) look like the next coming of Paul Crewe and Johnny Utah combined.
The Killer's take at Mlive gives several scenarios as to what the living Hell is going on in Allen Park:
The Lions don't know the extent of Stanton's recovery time (he's having arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday) and, if it's going to be significant, the Lions can put Stanton on injured reserve and keep O'Connell as the No. 3.
So why sign Brooks Bollinger when the Lions knew they had a claim in for O'Connell, knowing they would get him because they have the first option in the league? Because the Lions knew O'Connell wouldn't be in Detroit in time for Tuesday's practice and the Lions needed an emergency quarterback to get through the Buffalo game.
That's just one take Killer comes up with, he has 3 more...
What had appeared to be a fairly strong QB situation with the Lions has suddenly morphed into a 3-ring circus. It's led by the highest paid rookie in history, who is now backed up by a bad journeyman and a worse 2nd year Pats washout from the //sarcasm on//QB factory//sarcasm off// known as SDSU.
Only the Lions, even though it's because of fluke injuries, could find themselves in such an unsettled situation going into the final exhibition.
It's official. The Detroit Lions were born under a bad sign.
