The Turk has finished his duties for the day, thus the Lions are now down to their final 53 man roster. For the time being, anyway. I fully expect the Lions' brass to troll the waiver wire for fresh meat more talented players.
Throughout the day, we heard nothing official as to whom the Lions deemed cut worthy, though rumors abounded. We now have the official cut list straight from Allen Park HQ, and there are a few surprises.
The cut list, in alphabetical order:
LB Rufus Alexander, QB Brooks Bollinger, G Milford Brown, TE Carson Butler, RB Aveion Cason, WR Keary Colbert, DE Sean Conover, K Billy Cundiff, DT Chuck Darby, RB Tristan Davis, LB Zack Follett, C Dan Gerberry, TE Dan Gronkowski, WR Dane Looker, DB Calvin Lowry, T Lydon Murtha, DB Ramzee Robinson, DB Stuart Schweigert, DT Shaun Smith, LB Spenser Smith, WR John Standeford.
The full 53 man roster, as it stands tonight, can be seen at DetroitLions.com.
CB Chris Roberson was placed on the reserve/injured list, ie: he's on the IR, and out for the season.
I'd venture a guess the Lions are likely hoping to sneak Davis, Follett, Gronkowski and Murtha on to the practice squad. Keep in mind other team's cuts are eligible for the Lions' practice squad.
So much for SI's "most indispensable player." Shaun Smith did nothing in the preseason to earn a job. But with DT being such a weak position, I'm still surprised the Lions didn't keep him.
The Lions are carrying 4 QB's for the time being, as Kevin O'Connell is not listed as waived. Once Drew Stanton is fully recovered from knee surgery, O'Connell heads to the practice squad...if he passes through waivers.
Aaron Brown is your number 3 running back! We fans owe Brown a huge ass favor, as his training camp performance allowed the Lions to waive Avieon Cason. Kudos to you, sir!
Derrick Williams and Adam Jennings are your backup wide outs (Megatron, Johnson and Northcutt were locks). My money was on Dane Looker making the team. Good thing I'm no longer a betting man.
The team is only carrying 3 safeties at the moment (Delmas, Manuel, and Pearson), as Ko Simpson still needs to take his physical. Someone currently on the roster is going to be disappointed.
Cletis Gordon the slack jawed corner is on the 53 man. YES! (Anything to give me an excuse to run my very quick and very bad photochop!) Now to get a Ralph Wiggum reference on TWFE. That's unpossible!

Ikaika Alma-Francis gets another chance to show we fans his 2nd round draft status was totally undeserved. The stench of Matt Millen remains...
As Jason Hanson has not yet been deemed healthy enough to kick, a roster spot may have made before next Sunday for Billy Cundiff.
7 of Detroit's 10 2009 draft picks made the 53 man:
1st round: QB Matthew Stafford and TE Brandon Pettigrew
2nd round: S Louis Delmas
3rd round: LB DeAndre Levy and WR Derrick Williams
4th round: DT Sammie Lee Hill
6th round: RB Aaron Brown
All the 7th round selections, Murtha, Follett and Gronkowski, were victims of the final cut.
The 53 man roster is going to be a fairly fluid list as the Lions work out players who were the final cuts from other NFL teams. This is not the team we'll see on September 13th in NOLA.
