Monday morning update: Instead of of diffusing the issue himself, the Cabrera story blew up early this morning. Just as I figured, the media dug up the dirt.
Cabrera allegedly upset his wife by coming home intoxicated at 6 a.m. and waking his children while talking on a cell phone.
Patterson said the pair struggled over the cell phone with each receiving minor injuries. Both refused medical attention.

Cabrera was asked to leave the house by his wife, Rosangel. He was taken to the Birmingham police station because he was "very uncooperative, incoherent, and there was a language barrier," according to Patterson. A Spanish interpreter was obtained from the Michigan State Police, because investigators were attempting to determine who was the aggressor in the struggle.
Neither party wished to press criminal charges. Cabrera has not been cited in the incident and was released to the care of Tigers officials. Police administered a breath test and Cabrera registered .26. A reading of .08 is considered intoxicated for motorists.
The Freep has essentially the same story. USA Today (Via Scott at The Cutoff Man) reports the Tigers are LIVID with Cabrera, and rightly so.
I'm sure Eno and I will have lots to say on tonight's Knee Jerks podcast, but I have only one thought at the moment...Dude, a .26? .26?! Dammit, you should have known better! Dumb, dumb, dumb.
Let me add...

And, of course...

Sunday night thoughts: The Tigers manged to get their act together just enough to manage one win against the White Sox this weekend, winning 5-3 Sunday afternoon, as Justin Verlander, once again, stepped up big time. Instead of blowing the division outright, the Tigers have a shot at salvaging their season.
They now find themselves in a one game playoff at 5PM Tuesday in Minnesota's Baggiedome. The winner plays the Yankees in the ALDS, the loser gets to ponder why they are no longer playing.
But...I know, there's always a but...
Rather than talking about plays like this...

Rumors abound as to what exactly happened to Miguel Cabrera between the end of Friday night's game and the start of Saturday's. All we know is Cabrera's face was unblemished Friday, and quite banged up on Saturday.
It's easy enough to find the Cabrera rumors on the web. Everything from a dog, to a bar fight, to a DUI is being bandied about, and none of rumors are very flattering. Well, maybe "my pet dog did it" is, but that's it. The rest involve some sort of late night shenanigans. Actually, shenanigans is too lighthearted. Late night carousing is more fitting.
Was whatever Cabrera was up to a big reason why, in the biggest series of the season, the most important games since the '06 World Series, the normally big hitting Cabrera disappeared, going 0-11 at the plate? The only person who apparently knows for sure is GM Dave Dombrowski, as Cabrera isn't talking to anyone else...especially the media. And the media isn't satisfied with "no comment."
But should they be?
I'm with the always well-spoken Kurt of Make Avenue Tigers on this. I tend to side with...yes, the MSM should be satisfied. Until whatever Cabrera got himself into, if anything at all, becomes a legal matter, which then makes his actions part of the public record, it really isn't any of our business. Period.
Is Cabrera exacerbating matters by blowing off the media, leaving the clubhouse before anyone can talk to him? Damn straight he is, it's a huge mistake. By not talking, he's just going to ratchet up the media muckraking. And I guarantee some reporter will find out the truth, likely much sooner than later.
As we were talking about this during the live blog with Detroit4Lyfe, it was said no one stays quiet for long. If something happened, there will be cell phone pics or videos popping up before you could say "Give me another shooter." Which makes the Tigers' highest paid player taking the "I'm not talking and you can't make me" road pretty darn stupid.
If Cabrera came out tomorrow and said, "I'm making one statement about Friday night/Saturday morning. Yes, I was //pick your preferred rumor and insert it here// and that's all I can say for the time being," then this would soon smooth over. At the very least, it would slowly move from the limelight, as the upcoming game with the Twins would soon overshadow anything that may have happened. (Unless Cabrera's troubles involve something similar to what former LA governor and convicted criminal Edwin Edwards once said, "The only way I can lose this election is if I'm caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy." Then all bets are null and void, and we'll see a free-for-f'n-all.)
I hope the Tigers' brass is encouraging Cabrera to take the high road, and say something, anything, to the media. If only so we can get back to talking about historic choke jobs, Kid Rick and evil Baggiedomes instead of Miguel Cabrera's face.
