The depth chart is shuffled once again, with a significant change to the offensive line. Before you get your hopes up, the change does NOT involve the much and most deservedly maligned LT Jeff Backus.
With that out of the way...
Per John Niyo at the Detroit News:
Jon Jansen appears to be the new starting left guard, replacing Daniel Loper, who has moved to right tackle, where he'll back up starter Gosder Cherilus. Manny Ramirez and Dylan Gandy are the backup guards behind Jansen and Stephen Peterman, while Jeff Backus and Dominic Raiola remain the starters at left tackle and center.
Loper was signed a free agent to shore up the Lions' interior offensive line. As we all could see, it didn't work out that way. Jansen is a long-time vet who anchored the Redskins line for a decade at tackle. He's never played guard in the NFL, but there's no time like the present to learn how, right?
One of these decades the Lions will make the correct draft picks and free agent signings, and develop a good, solid, stable offensive line. Till that time however, the Lions coaching staff will have to make due by constantly shuffling players in and out of the starting lineup (much as they are with the defensive backfield), and hoping something sticks.
Maybe, just maybe, Jansen will stick. Miracles can happen...even in Detorit.
