Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers running dairy - 1st quarter: 20 in a row?

We're getting conflicting information. According to the Lions' inactive list on NFL.com, Calvin Johnson WILL play today. According to the Lions' beat guys, Mlive's Killer Kowalski on FOX 2's pregame show, and John Niyo in his Detroit News blog, Megatron is OUT.

Lions Inactives:

  • Matthew Stafford QB  Third quarterback.
  • Ko Simpson  SS
  • Phillip Buchanon  CB
  • Manny Ramirez  OG
  • Jon Jansen  OT
  • Sammie Lee Hill DT
  • Jason Hunter DE
  • Dewayne White DE

Packers Inactives:

  • Korey Hall FB
  • DeShawn Wynn RB
  • Matt Giordano DB
  • Mark Tauscher OT
  • Breno Giacomini OT
  • Jason Spitz C
  • Jarius Wynn DE
  • Jeremy Thompson LB

I guess we'll see what happens at 1PM, huh?

CJ update 12:40 PM: We found out sooner than 1 PM, as NFL.com has updated their inactives page to reflect Megatron is OUT. Dennis Northcutt will start opposite Bryant Johnson at WR.

And the good news keeps on a comin'. PFT is reporting Stafford's knee may be more severely injured than originally thought. The Lions' rookie QB is reportedly seeing the go-to doc for all things torn on pro athletes, Dr. James Andrews for further evaluation.

I have only one reaction...

Homer facepalm

What else would you expect?

Of course, PFT is the Weekly World News of NFL sites, but they do occasionally find something that sticks to the wall. Let's hope this doesn't...

And just like that, the Lions DENY DENY DENY the Stafford knee injury report, which apparently was originally reported by Chris Mortensen at the 4 Letter.

Per the Oakland Press:

A report today by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that quarterback Matthew Stafford’s knee injury is more serious than first believed and that he could be done for the season is not true according to Tom Lewand, the Lions’ president. Lewand said it’s nothing but rumor.

Whew...

Almost game time, and FOX cuts to Lambeau. Wonderful, we get to hear the strained "I'm a funny fat guy" schtick from Tony Siragusa today.

We're live from Green Bay with Kenny Albert, Moose Johnston and the unfunny fat guy. I'm live from my so-called office!

And the game starts off badly...FIRE KWAN! The Pack return a kickoff for a TD!  But...there's a flag halfway thru the play. A good sign it should be coming back.

HOLDING PACKERS! It's coming back all the way to the Pack's 20! I still stand by the FIRE KWAN, though.

Weird start to the game, as GB and the Lions trade 5 yard penalties. False start and offisides. Moose is bitching about the sloppiness, Goose comes up with some "Yeah, yeah, it is, Moose" wading pool deep analysis.

On 3rd and 7, Greg Jennings makes a great one handed catch at the 50. And the Lions D can't get their asses off the field.

3rd and 6, Aaron Rodgers is back to throw...deep drop...all kinds of time...SHIT! Jones is WIDE FUCKING OPEN at the 20, makes a quick move, and strolls into the end zone. A quick 6 for the Pack, and the PAT makes it 7-0.

facepalm picard

Not what I wanted to see, but it's pretty much what I expected.

Lions will start at their 30, and they start by pounding Smith into the line for no gain, then he loses 4, getting hit in the backfield before he could even make a move. Gonna be one of those days...

Culpepper drops back...feels pressure...AND THROWS IT TO A PACKER LINEMAN FOR THE PICK AT THE 17! Jenkins with an easy pick, as Culpepper botched what might have been a screen.

BENCH CULPEPPER! This is supposed to be a SAVVY veteran backup?

The Pack get a 1st down, go back to the 20 thanks to a penalty, then drive right back down to the goalline.

Rodgers wants to throw on 1st and goal, has lots of time (as if I expect pressure from the Lions' front 4) and finds the FB, Kuhn, open in the flat for another easy TD. 14-0 just like that. They are Lambeau leaping all over the God damn place.

Fucking pitiful. The Lions SUCK. Even worse, I SUCK for being a fan. Just my luck being born into Detroit fandom, I guess. I'm a fan of the Lions for better or for worse, right? Well, I want a DIVORCE!

The Pack have out gained the Lions 112 to -5. And Culpepper gets sacked on 1st down. Make it 112 to -15.

Kill me now.

Culpepper throws into coverage on 3rd and 15, he was lucky not to have thrown his 2nd pick of the day. This is getting real ugly, real quick. Much like my mood...

Let's pray to the football Gods.

monte prayer

Please make this loss be as painless as possible. AMEN.

I doubt my prayers will be answered.

The Pack are trying to drive downfield again, but they keep getting penalized. 5 in the 1st quarter with 3:00 left in the 1st. Small favors, as it's not helping the Lions one bit.

Rodgers wants to throw on 2nd and very long...SACK! Cliff Averil with the sack, and he celerates like it's 1999, but...there's a Lion hurt on the play.  Another d-lineman, Bryan, is down. Figures. Damn, what else can go wrong?

On 3rd and 28, the Lions FINALLY make a stop, and get their sorry asses off the field. Pack punts, which won't happen very often today. But the Pack commit another penalty (facemask) on what was a no return punt, so the Lions will have decent field position. It only means the Packers won't get quite as good field position when Culpepper turns the ball over.

The Lions try a reverse with Aaron Brown, and he breaks a tackle, getting 14 yards to the Pack 48. Then Culpepper completes his 1st pass of the day to Northcutt for 18 more. Lions moving the ball...but for how long?

As the quarter runs out, Brown takes a draw to the Pack 21. No, they take a TO with 0:20 left? Whatever they talked about doing, Culpepper didn't execute. A fade to the end zone was totally uncatchable. 4th and short.

The Lions will...go for it? Why the Hell not?

But it BLOWS up in their face as a misdirection pitch play to Kevin Smith fools no one, and loses a yard. Pack get the ball on downs.

I'm not even pissed at this point. Why waste the energy?

Pack run out the clock on the quarter, a quarter they DOMINATED.

14-0 Green Bay as we head further on into the slaughter.
