With the NFL starting their game weekends on Thursday, long-time friend of TWFE, Blane, aka Wolverlion, doesn't have near as much time to analyze the weeks games. Not that it's stopped him from putting up a winning record in his battle with radio listeners in SW MI.
Here's the latest from the now 5-4-1 Wolverlion:
I had a great week last week as I only missed 2 games over the weekend. I smoked my opponent to finally get a "W" and a little respect back. This week scares me a little with some tough games to pick, and I am rolling the dice a bit with a couple.
By the way, I like all Lions fans was jacked up to see Stafford performance on Sunday. I do not think I am overstating it when I say it was legendary. I will tell my grand kids about that game someday. It is a sad state of affairs when we have to look to a victory over a 1 win Browns team as part of Lions lore, but such is the sad state of football in Detroit. We are the Cubs fans of the NFL.
Sad state of affairs, indeed.
Remember, the Hillbilly Huddle airs every Friday and Monday between 7 and 8 AM on the blowtorch of SE MI, 97.5 Y-Country radio, WYTZ FM. You hosts are football expert Blane, aka Wolverlion, and 97.5 Y country morning man Wild Bill Lewis.
Every week, Blane asks me to post his WYTZ picks for all to see. I can't help but make my own picks, or at least make smart ass remarks about his picks and the games themselves.
Wolverlion's picks are in bold, while my snarky ass commentary is in italics.
Thanksgiving Day:
Green Bay @ Detroit: Aaron Rodgers will pick the Lions depleted secondary apart like my uncle Tom going over the Turkey carcass after dinner. Take the Pack BIG, especially if Stafford cannot go. I'm expecting the same result. Biggest game of the year for the Lions, national TV, the entire nation watching, and it looks as if Stafford and Megatron can't go. Talk about at recipe for embarrassment. Such is our lot as Lions fans.
Oakland @ Dallas: Take the Cowboys at home and on national TV. Oakland isn't going to beat an over .500 team two weeks in a row. For that matter, Bruce Gradowski isn't going to win two games in a row. As Wade Phillips would say, "Me lose to Raiders? That's unpossible!"
NY Giants @ Denver: This is the Thursday night game on the NFL network. I will be forced to watch as my wife has a crush on Eli Manning. Take the Giants on the road as the Broncos are starting to look like the team I expected at the beginning of the year. A crush on Eli? (I could make some sort of Three Dog Night "Eli's Coming" joke, but I won't go there out of respect for the sanctity of marriage) Well, he is the better looking Manning brother, which is comparable to saying he's the better looking hillbilly of the two guys who make Ned Beatty squeal like a pig in "Deliverance". Take the Wolverlion's wife's NY crush over the neck bearded journeyman QB in Denver.
Sunday:
Tampa @ Atlanta: Take the Falcons and Matt Ryan at home. They are a good team and are due to break out of their slump. I'm surprised the Falcons haven't played better this season. The pieces are there, but they are still young and learning how to win. But you don't need to learn how to win when you are playing the Bucs. The Buccos will do most of the work for you. Falcons win easily.
Miami @ Buffalo: I hate taking the Fins on the road, but I am forced to as I think the Bills are only slightly north of our beloved Lions. Got to take the Fins, as the Bills are currently in an organizational clusterfuck. Buffalo is heading down the slippery slope to total NFL irrelevance. At least the Lions appear to being heading back up said slope after a solid draft, and not wasting free agent money on players like Terrell Owens.
Cleveland @ Cincy: Take the Bengals, even though they are still kicking themselves over an awful loss in Oakland last week. The Browns are just plain bad as evidenced last week in Detroit. What excuses will the Mangenius come up with this week after the Browns get pummeled? After seeing Mangini's antics during the game, and his constant complaining afterward, I can understand why Browns fans want this idiot canned yesterday.
Seattle @ St. Louis: I have waiting for Hasslebeck to break out all year, I am tired of waiting, I am going with a hunch and taking the Rams. I can pretty much guarantee this game won't end up near as entertaining as last weeks battle of the bottom feeders, Lions - Rams. This is going to be an ugly matchup. Rams are at home, and have the best player on the field in Steven Jackson. That's enough to give the Rams a slight, and only a slight, nod over the 'Hawks. But there is no way in Hell I would put money on this game.
Carolina @ NY Jets: I am taking the Jets at home only because I think they are due. Remember when Matt Sanchez was playing like the best rookie in the league? Now he's on the verge of being benched, while Matt Stafford seems to be improving every game. I'm going with Carolina, as I fully expect the implosion of Sanchez to continue.
Washington @ Philly---I think this is a no brainer, but geez, who knows with this crazy Eagles team. I am taking the Birds at home. The Iggles are bipolar. You never know which personality will show up from week to week. They can look like Super Bowl contenders one week, top 5 draft pick worthy the next. But in a battle of wits between Eagles' head coach Andy Reid and racist logo's dead coach walking Jim Zorn, Zorn is an unarmed man.
Indy @ Houston---I really expected this to be a big time game for the Texans, but after stubbing their collective toe Monday night, some of the air has been let out of their balloon. I will take the Colts in a big time road win. How many cliche's in that sentence??? I count 4, but no worries. I've been known to beat many a cliche' like a dead horse. The Texans don't have the weapons to compete with Indy, and to make things worse, they have a tendency to drop the ball on the turf. Indy extends their regular season winning streak to 20.
K.C. @ San Diego: Look for the Chargers to run away and hide with this division. Take San Diego at home. I said as much in my power rankings, the Bolts won the AFC West Sunday when they rode the Broncos hard and put them away wet. San Diego continues to roll.
Jacksonville @ San Fran: I am just going on a hunch here, I sort of expect the Niners to jump up and bite the Jags here. a Jags are on a mini-roll, having had a cake schedule over the past 6 weeks. The Niners are
Chicago @ Minny: Wow, season over in Chicago, and now Old Favre against new Favre ( Jay Cutler ). Look for the Vikings to smoke Chicago and just about seal up the NFC North. I was going to compare Cutler to Jon Kitna. Both tend to turn the ball over at the absolutely worst time, turnovers waiting to happen. The only difference is Cutler is young enough to change perceptions. Favre, as annoying as he can be, is having a marvelous season. The Vikes aren't near as good if they had gone with Tavarius Jackson. Vikes win as Cutler throws 3 more picks.
Arizona @ Tenn: This is an interesting game and I will be sure to watch some of this one. The Cardinals are 5-0 on the road this year, the Titans are 4-0 with Vince Young as QB. Something has to give. I will take the Cardinals in a good game. The Titans are 4-0 with Vince Young barely throwing the ball. He either hands off to Chris Johnson, and gets out of the way, or scrambles out of the pocket for positive yardage. Actually throwing the ball is Young's last option. The combination is working...for now. The Cards have Kurt Warner, who is better than Young is ever going to be. Cardinals all but clinch the NFC West in a win.
Pitt @ Baltimore: Big Ben looks like he will play, therefore, I will pick the Steelers to try and keep pace with the Bengals. That just does not sound right, does it? The Steelers keeping pacing with the Bengals??? No, it doesn't. Both teams need a win to keep the Bengals within sight, and stay in the Wild Card race. The Ravens defense ring Big Ben's bell again in a close, entertaining game.
Monday:
New England @ New Orleans: Wow, what a great matchup. I am tempted to take Michigan man Tom Brady on national TV to crush the Saints dreams of a perfect season. However, that dome is a tough place to play and the crowd will be insane Monday night. I will take the Saints in a high scoring affair. Agreed on all counts. This should be a kick ass game, a must see. This is the Saints' year, and as good as Tom Terrific is, Drew Brees has been playing even better. I think the Saints are a better team, but I'd never count the Pats out. Take NOLA, but don't bet on it. Money-wise, I wouldn't touch this game with a 10 foot pole...even if he was named Drew Breeski.
