First, Happy Thanksgiving to all! Yes, I am going to treat this as a normal game day. Bitching at the Lions never takes a holiday off!
We start the dairy with good news...I think. From all accounts, Matthew Stafford, separated shoulder and all, is going to play today!
Mt first thought was the kid may have more guts than brains, and the Lions must be more desperate than I thought. But the media is reporting Stafford can't do any more damage to his shoulder, and if he can tolerate what has to be fairly intense pain, the Lions are willing to let their franchise take the field. It'll make for some compelling TV, to say the very least.
Stafford's brass balls grow bigger by the week.
Calvin Johnson, who was also thought to be questionable, at best, for today's game, is following his quarterback's lead, and will play.
We also have the inactives for today:
Detroit: Wide receiver Derrick Williams, safety Kalvin Pearson, fullback Terrelle Smith, linebacker Ernie Sims, center Melvin Fowler, offensive tackle Ephraim Salaam and defensive end Dewayne White. As always, Drew Stanton is the emergency quarterback.
Green Bay: Wide receiver Biren Ealy, defensive end Jarius Wynn, defensive backs Josh Bell and Matt Giordano, offensive tackles Breno Giacomini and Allen Barbre, running back Ahman Green and linebacker Aaron Kampman.
Joe Buck and Troy Aikman are LIVE from a sold out Ford Field in Detroit, while I'm LIVE from my so-called office while the GF is preparing a turkey day feast in the next room. She's great, allowing me to get my Lions football fix in on a holiday. As the old ads used to say, I think I'll keep her.
Twitter reports from Lions fans at the game say Stafford got a monstrous ovation. He's not your typical Lions' QB.
Buck: "The legend of Stafford grows!"So are his brass balls.
The Pack take the kickoff...and put the ball on the turf! BALLBALLBALL! After the refs untangle the pile of humanity...it's...LIONS BALL!
Stafford completes his first pass, goes for a 1st down to Pettigrew! 1st and goal, Lions.I LOVE this kid.
A 2nd down screen pass is thrown away, but there's a FLAG! Personal foul, as Stafford was hit in the head. But attention immediatley turns to Pettigrew, who is on the turf, holding his knee. SHITSHITSHIT. Replays show his knee buckled while blocking. Keep your fingers crossed folks.
We're back from commercial, and we're shown the rookie TE walk off, though it's a bit gingerly.I am not happy.
2nd and goal from the 1, Stafford with a short drop, throws slightly behind Megatron...which was likely by design...who makes the easy catch! Lions take the lead!
Hanson drills the PAT, Lions up 7-0. MERRY TURKEY DAY...or something like that. I'm just thankful the Lions started off well. Well, I'm thankful for so much more this year, obviously...but damn, I love to see the Lions play well.
PSIU leaves a comment we can all agree upon:
JESUS. Turn game on. Pettigrew catch. Pettigrew injured. Are you freaking kidding me! Basically no contact on the play too.
Lions luck, PSIU. That's typical Lions luck.
Packers hold on to the kick off, and convert a 1st down. Meh. Don't start harshing my Turkey Day mellow, guys.
On 3rd and 6, Rodgers has what feels like 5 minutes in the pocket, takes his good ol' time finding a receiver, and converts. Christ, the pass rush blows.
FOX is telling us Pettigrew is listed as questionable, but he left for the locker room unable to put much weight on his knee. FUCK ME. He's done for at least today, maybe longer.
I'm shaking my fists at the football Gods. Why do they hate us so? What did we ever do to make them angry?
Packers continue to drive the ball well into Detroit territory, having gone 3 for 3 on 3rd down conversions. The crowd is dead quiet.
Pack with another 3rd and long at the 25...Rodgers misfires on a pass down the middle. The Lions finally get a fucking stop!
Crosby on for the 43 yard FG...WIDE RIGHT! The Pack take 8 minutes off the clock, and have jack shit to show for it.
FOX shows a clip of Martin Mayhew on the sidelines, blistering Culpepper. Seems he didn't take the news of Stafford starting well at all. Pam Oliver confirms Culpepper's hissy fit, as he's shown sulking on the bench.
While the Culpepper drama plays out, the Lions convert a pair of 1st downs, but now fave 3rd and 4 from the Packers 37. Stafford drops back...looks for the right sideline...

FUUUUCK....it's picked. Not a well thrown ball, and Heller was covered tightly by Collins. Rookie mistake.
On 3rd and long, Rodgers is back to throw...has time..still has time...has even more time...has set up camp in the pocket...waves to the crowd...takes a piss...looks deep...and Driver is well behind the waiver wire pickup Marvin White...Driver makes the catch and is dragged down inside the Detroit 10.
That was fucking depressing. Hell of a bad way to end the 1st quarter.
On to the 2nd with the Pack in scoring position, and the Lions still up, 7-0,
