The Freep's tag team of Carlos Monarrez and Nick Cotsonika report OLB Ernie Sims may...I repeat, may...miss a considerable amount of time.
Sims, who suffered his injury late in Sunday’s game at Seattle, said that according to a medical diagnosis, he has a Grade 2 tear, which is a partial tear in the muscle.
Sims said he has begun rehabilitation but had no timetable for his return. Recovery for Grade 2 tears often take one to two months, according to medical literature.
From what I could find out doing comprehensive, exhausting research (a 30 second Google search), a Grade 2 hamstring tear is pretty damn painful:
Grade 2: Is a partial tear in the muscle.
- Gait will be affected-limp may be present .
- May be associated with occasional sudden twinges of pain during activity.
- May notice swelling.
- Pressure increases pain.
- Flexing the knee against resistance causes pain.
- Might be unable to fully straighten the knee.
As of Thursday night, the only thing we know for sure about Sims is he is almost certainly out for Sunday's game at the Baggiedome. The Lions apparently aren't saying anything more about his status. Par for the course for The Schwartz, who gives out injury information on a "needs to know" basis...only Schwartz needs to know.
I'd be more worried about Sims missing time if DeAndre Levy wasn't around. The rookie has filled in more than ably earlier in the season, to the point where it's questionable if Sims will get his starting gig back when he returns.
At least there is one position on the Lions where an injury doesn't decimate depth or compromise performance.
But if Levy goes down? Well, Levy was the depth, so you figure it out. Becuase Schwartz will need the suggestions...
