When Brandon Pettigrew went down like he was shot against the Packers, holding his left knee, then not putting weight on the injured leg when leaving the field, I feared we wouldn't hear good news regarding his injury.

Brandon Pettigrew hurts knee

Knees aren't supposed to bend that way...

My spidey sense was tingling for good reason. The injury is as severe as it looked. Pettigrew is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Via Killer Kowalski at Mlive:

Detroit Lions rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew will undergo season-ending surgery on the left knee that he injured in the first half of Detroit's game against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.

Team spokesman Bill Keenist confirmed that Pettigrew's MRI result revealed the need for surgery.

Pettigrew, who suffered the injury to his left knee, torn an ACL in high school but Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he doesn't believe the same knee is involved.

Soon, Pettigrew will be the 14th Lion placed on injured reserve.

Obviously, Casey Fitzsimmons and Will Heller, bothof whom have received a fair amount of playing time this season, will become options 1A and 1B at tight end. Who ends up on the field at any specific time will depend upon the need for either a receiving TE (Fitzsimmons) or a blocking TE (Heller).

As for Pettigrew, who was rapidly improving as both a receiver and blocker, making the Roy Williams trade look more lopsided by the game, I have only one explanation.

This franchise is CURSED.

Black Friday, indeed.
