This is getting old. Very, very old.

Per John Niyo at the News:

The team placed safety Marquand Manuel on IR on Wednesday, replacing him on the roster with safety DeAngelo Smith, a rookie fifth-round pick who was signed off the Chicago Bears' practice squad.

Another day, another player done for the season

Replacing Manuel is a Bears practice squad safety, rookie DeAngelo Smith. Considering the round about way Smith arrived in Detroit, I'm not sure we should be expecting much.

Niyo once again:

Smith, a hard-hitting, 5-foot-11 cornerback out of Cincinnati, was drafted by Dallas to help at free safety and in the return game. He was among the Cowboys' final preseason roster cuts and was claimed off waivers, first by Cleveland and later by Chicago. The Bears waived him a third time, but re-signed him to their practice squad a month ago.

It's good so many teams have taken an interest in Smith, so there must be something there, talent-wise. But what does it say he wasn't able to stick on the active roster of any of them? It says he's a project, at best.

After checking out Smith's draft profile on NFL.com, I found this:

Whiffs on attempts to cut tackle because he ducks his head.

Now it all makes sense why the Lions were interested. He'll fit right in with the rest of Detroit's defenders.
