It's a done deal. Officially official. It's all over but the crying. Kevin Smith's season has ended.
Per Jim Schwartz, via Nick Cotsonika at the Freep:
“He’s got it bad,” Schwartz said at his news conference today. “I don’t want to speak for doctors until they go in and they can analyze all those different things, because I’ve seen situations where it’s been worse than expected or even better than expected.
“But it’ll be a season-ending injury for him. Where it goes from there will depend on what happens when the doctors get in there and really see what’s at stake and all. But I think anybody who saw it knows it’s a severe knee injury.”
"He's got it bad".
Not the most encouraging prognosis for your number one back, is it?
If the injury is as bad as Schwartz made it sound, Smith won't be anywhere near full speed by the time training camp starts. Thus, the Lions will definitely be in the market for a running back in the upcoming draft or free agency. (As for Aaron Brown, he's a 3rd down/change of pace guy, he's not a feature back) How high they are willing to go in drafting a running back is anybody's guess, but 2nd or 3rd round isn't out of the question if the right talent falls to them.
As for free agency, a good running back won't come cheap. They never do. (Here's a list of anticipated fee agent RBs for '10, though missing from the list is one big name, sure to be free agent, Reggie Bush)
This was the LAST thing a team in such dire straits defensively needed. Having to fill a another skill position, when so many picks have been wasted in the past, is crippling to Detroit's future plans.
Typical Lions' luck. It's always bad.
